A wonderful artistic walking experience
Chartres is a really beautiful little city at only 1 hour from Paris. Well none for its Cathedral that is being renovated at the moment. My husband and I went over there during the summer and had the chance to discover Chartres en Lumière: A great lighting experience based on projection mapping.
There is this fantastic path in the city that you follow thanks to little inlaid lights in the ground. Those lights brings you to discover different experiences of projection mapping in all the city. Each of the 24 experiences tells a different story that is based on history and heritage.
But, what is exactly projection mapping ?
“Projection mapping, also known as video mapping and spatial augmented reality, is a projection technology used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into a display surface for video projection. These objects may be complex industrial landscapes, such as buildings, small indoor objects or theatrical stages. By using specialized software, a two- or three-dimensional object is spatially mapped on the virtual program which mimics the real environment it is to be projected on. The software can interact with a projector to fit any desired image onto the surface of that object.” Wikipedia
